chat

This chat activity only works on the local network
This chat
activity will only work with other GCompris users on your local network, not on
the Internet. To use it, just type in your message and hit Enter. Your message
is then broadcast on the local network, and any GCompris program running the
chat activity on that local network will receive and display your message.
This is an OK activity but it doesn't offer anything over and above the OLPC
preinstalled chat program. Since all OLPC users are logged in to their
laptops as user "olpc" the chat window shows two individuals talking to each
other who are both called "olpc". This makes following the conversation
difficult.
The fact that all chatters have to set the same channel number in order to
chat is a major problem. It means that everyone has to know that it is
time to chat before a chat can be initiated. The OLPC's approach of
inviting someone else to chat is better.
Broadcasting to all chatter's is also a problem. Being able to hold
private conversations is better.
There is no function for saving the chat transcript.
